From ferrying new planes long distances from factories to military bases to testing newly overhauled planes to towing live targets to give ground and air gunners training shooting, the WASP expected to become part of the military during their service. Instead, the program was canceled after just two years.
The fact that the WASP were forgotten by their own Air Force united the women. They lobbied Congress to be militarized and nearly 30 years later, in 1977, they were granted military status.
Recognizing the importance of the WASP in not only female aviation but national Air Force history as well, the "Fly Girls" finally received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.
The phrase "We Can Do It", coined for women during World War II efforts, was once again spoken loudly amongst the remaining "Fly Girls" as they received the recognition they deserved.
